Sunflowers are the subject of twoseries of still life paintings by Van Gogh. The earlier series painted in Paris in 1887, depicts the flowers lying on the ground, while the second series painted a year later in Arles shows bouquets of sunflowers in a vase. Van Gogh began painting the second series in late summer 1888 and continued into the following year. The paintings, at the gtime, were considered innovative for their use of the yellow pigment.
